The WBBL Trophy got underway on Saturday night, with Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters in pursuit of a third consecutive crown and Sevenoaks Suns hosting Barking Abbey Crusaders in a South East derby.

The Hatters scored a crucial win in the North Group, beating the league-leading Nottingham Wildcats – whom they also beat in the 2015 final of this competition – by 82-72 as Georgia Gayle posted 22 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Meanwhile, in the South Group, Crusaders came through overtime to beat Suns 71-69 as Diana Naydenova-Goryanova and Charlotte Ellmore scored the crucial baskets in the extra period.
