We caught up with WBBL head coaches Mark Clark and Kenrick Liburd to get their thoughts on Sunday’s season climax at The 02 as Nottingham Wildcats and Sevenoaks Suns meet in the 2017 WBBL Play-Off Final.

Kenrick Liburd (Oaklands Wolves)

“This is a very difficult game to call, with both coaches doing a great job of putting their teams in great offensive situations in very different ways.

“Dave Greenaway took a number of risks breaking up his Nottingham squad and bringing in a natural point guard in Ferreira, who makes the game easier for all around her. It has paid off, allowing them to fix their chemistry in time to retain their regular season title. Nottingham have a great deal of talent and their coach designs systems to put his players in opportunities to be successful offensively – making them a very difficult stop.

“When you look at what Molten WBBL Coach of the Year, Len Busch has done this season and the form the Suns are in, winning big games and the Trophy run, I think it is a tribute to how he empowers his group and gets them playing with an air of freedom and confidence. They’re probably the most versatile group in our league and one of the most difficult groups to play against, since they can hurt you in so many ways, while always feeding off your mistakes.

“I find it very difficult to bet against Prior and Harris, with the toughness and quality they bring to the table. They will also be very focused on getting last year’s Final loss out of their system and will have learnt a great deal from their experience of playing at The O2 previously.

“The Suns will make it difficult, through the consistency of Anne Pederson and Co, as well as the offensive potency of Cat Carr. But, I just can’t look past Nottingham if they come in with the right level of focus.

Mark Clark (Barking Abbey Crusaders)

“The last league meeting between these teams [and regardless of which players were missing for the game] gives Sevenoaks real belief that they can win. Without that loss, Wildcats would have a big psychological advantage. The key areas for me are whether Suns match-up with Ashley Harris and whether the Wildcats’ team defence can contain the multiple threats of Suns.

“Harris is a tough match up for Suns and one-on-one, they can’t contain her. Coach [Len] Busch has found answers to those types of questions all year and he needs another answer if Suns are going to win. The Wildcats’ team defence is going to be challenged. If they do not play defence away from the ball, then Suns will get good shots.

“Nottingham should win week in and week out, with their talent, which has proved to be the best talent. But this is a one-off game and Suns are confident at the moment. The last league game gives them confidence they could sneak a win in a close game. I might just have the Suns to win, but the only guarantee is for the WBBL to win with another great game to end an amazing season.”
