Oaklands Wolves have announced a marquee signing for the 2017-18 season by bringing in American player Rachel Morris.
A 6ft 4in centre from Nevada, she arrives to the Hertfordshire side after finishing her college career at NCAA DI University of Hawaii. Graduating in 2016 with a major in Sociology, the skilled big finished her last two collegiate years at Hawaii with 5.1 points, 3.4 rebounds shooting 53% in only 14 minutes per game. Morris also played a key part in the universities first ever Big West Championship in 2016.
A highly recruited athlete out of Virgin Valley High School; Morris excelled in both Volleyball and Basketball, winning two championships and being named MVP in both seasons, whilst setting a State record in blocked shots. She spent her freshman year at the University of Utah before moving to Salt Lake Community College, where she averaged 12.3 points, 7.4 rebounds & 2 blocks per game.
“Signing Rachel is a big statement of intent for us and we are delighted she has chosen to come to Oaklands,” said Wolves’ play-caller Lee Ryan.
“A great character, I knew Rachel at Salt Lake and have tracked her progress since. With her size and ability to command the paint at both ends of the court, she has the potential to be dominant in the WBBL
“Rachel is hungry to get better and will be a great example for all players right through the program. I’m really looking forward to working with her every day.”
Morris comes to WBBL ready to help the Wolves move in the right direction and commented: “I’ve watched film and I can see the potential in this team and younger players, I’m ready to challenge them and be pushed by them every day. I know I can step in and help the team right away in the WBBL.
“I look forward to working with Coach Ryan and getting on the court and progressing my skills. I’ve seen how he can develop a good player into a great one and I couldn’t be more excited to get started!”
