28 Oct 2017: Riders 64-73 Suns

WBBL Championship

Leicester Riders 64 – 73 Sevenoaks Suns (31-17, 38-34, 44-53)

Sevenoaks Suns prevailed in a game between two unbeaten sides as they overcame Leicester Riders 73-64 on the road, led by Judit Fritz.

Suns move to 5-0, and they also now have five straight wins against Riders in all competitions, including last season’s Trophy Final, and five wins in a row in meetings in Leicester too.

Leading scorers – Oliver 13, Navarro 13, Smith 12 (Riders); Fritz 22, Busch 11, Carr 10 (Suns)

Turning point – After trailing 31-17 in the first quarter, Suns turned the game around in the second by holding Riders scoreless for five minutes and dropping 11 points of their own, including five for Renee Busch. That laid the foundation for them to eventually get in front on Fritz’s basket at 42-40 midway through the third, and they didn’t look back.

Key stat – After scoring 31 points in a first quarter blitz, Suns allowed Riders just 13 points in the next two quarters as they used their defence to claw their way back into this game. That also translated into offence, as they scored 22 points from the 16 turnovers that they forced.

Game hero – Judit Fritz led the scoring with 22 points on 71% shooting, and also added six assists to lead the Suns to victory.
