We look at who’s been lighting it up in the WBBL at the start of the season.
Scoring machines
It may have been a struggle for the still winless newcomers, but Nicolette Fong Lyew Quee (Durham Palatinates) has been doing everything in her power to help the north-east club get rolling with 23.6 points per game. The familiar face of Ashley Harris (Nottingham Wildcats) is close behind with 22.3 points per outing, with Molten WBBL Player of the Month Georgia Jones (Manchester Mystics) completing the medal spots with 22 points per game. Meanwhile impressive WBBL rookie Merissa Quick (Cardiff Met Archers) was the only other player to move through the 20 points per game barrier, with 20.8.
Sharp-shooters
Dom Allen (Manchester Mystics) led the way with a terrific 66.7% and another frontcourt player in Deborah Rodriguez (Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters) also found her range nicely at 63.2%. She just out-performed her team-mate Steph Gandy (Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters) who converted 59.4%.
On the glass
Gianna Woods (Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters) has enjoyed a scorching start to her WBBL career and accumulated a double-double so far, leading the league in rebounds with 12.2 boards per game. Ashley Harris (Nottingham Wildcats) also has a double-double season with 11 rebounds per outing. Great Britain forward Jamila Thompson (Leicester Riders) was the only other player to harvest double-digits on the glass with 10.5 rebounds per game.
Passing the rock
There are co-leaders at the top of our assists charts with a deadlock between Georgia Jones (Manchester Mystics) and Alex Smith (Leicester Riders) with 6.3 per game. Great Britain legend Stef Collins (Cardiff Met Archers) takes the last podium step with 6 assists per outing.
On the line
Georgia Jones (Manchester Mystics) was the only performer to exceed 90% as she dropped 90.9% of her free-throws during the period. Evelyn Ovner (Team Northumbria) was in second spot with 88.9% and three players in Kara Bonenberger (Team Northumbria), Kellie Ring (Oaklands Wolves) and Deanne Hayward (Leicester Riders) were all tied up on 85.7%.
Steal merchants
Alison Gorrell (Team Northumbria) has cemented a great reputation for herself offensively during her time in the WBBL, but she is also doing it at the other end of the floor having averaged a superb 4.6 steals per game so far. Alex Smith (Leicester Riders) is also recognised as one of the league’s premier guards and her 3.5 steals per game underlines why, with Jen Ashton (Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters) a newcomer looking to join that club, having grabbed an average of 3 steals per appearance.
Swat Queens
The throne and ‘Swat Queen’ crown will have to be shared between Ashley Harris (Nottingham Wildcats) and Jamila Thompson (Leicester Riders) as both came up with 1.6 blocks per game.
