Petermans Sheffield Hatters have strengthened their roster for the upcoming season by adding another three British players to the mix.

They will be injected with some major experience as Sarah Cooney leaps back on board and she can’t wait to link up with fellow mum and former team-mate Lisa Riches (nee Hutchinson), who is back after having two children.

“Obviously I played last year for the first time in three and a half years, while Lisa and I played a season together after having our first child each way back in the 14-15 season,” commented Cooney.

“I ended up playing last year joining part way through, as my sister Helen (Naylor) begged or rather encouraged me out of retirement.

“I really enjoyed playing again after my second baby, but after such a long time, I felt rusty and it took me a while to get back into things.”

She continued: “I feel so different this year so far. I’m enjoying pre-season and feeling like I’m playing better. It’s been awesome having Lisa back this year- some of my best memories and indeed playing seasons in the past have been playing with Lisa.

“She is such a great player. For us both to be back playing together after a long break and two children each is great – hopefully we can bring some valuable experience to the team.”

Meanwhile Hutchinson is also excited for her return and stated: “I’m Really happy to be back in the Hatters family after being away for so long and having two beautiful children.

“I never thought I would be playing at this level again, as I thought my boots were hung up for good, but I just missed the competitiveness that basketball gives you, and the friends and family vibe that you get from being part of the Hatters.

“It’s only been a few weeks of pre-season, but it already feels like I’ve never been away. I am really excited for the season to start as we have a great team, and I really can’t wait for my husband and children see me play.”

At the other end of the career spectrum, Hatters are also promoting rising star Alice Fallon.

And, the young gun who was in the Great Britain U16 squad in the summer will reap the rewards from being able to learn from an array of experienced teammates on the Hatters’ roster.

She said: “I am so excited to be a part of the Hatters WBBL team this season. It has been a dream of mine to play with the women ever since I started playing for Sheffield.

“I want to learn as much as I can and take my game to the next level. This season will be a challenge, but I can’t wait,” added Fallon.
