Temi Fagbenle becomes the third London Lion in succession to win Molten Most Valuable Player (MVP) honours in the British Basketball League, as the Great Britain legend secured the most coveted individual honour in the country after guiding her side to tremendous collective success throughout the season.
Succeeding fellow GB internationals Jo Leedham-Warner and Kiki Herbert-Harrigan, who secured MVP honours in the previous two campaigns, Fagbenle has been an unstoppable force on and off the court for the Lions this season, as they’ve conquered all challengers both domestically and in Europe.
One of the most dominant players in the history of the British game, Fagbenle’s debut season in the League has not disappointed by any stretch as the Team GB Olympian has taken the competition by storm in her first season with the London Lions.
Despite averaging just 17 minutes per contest, the Lions captain has contributed numbers not far off the League-leading marks in all major statistical categories – all of which are categories led by players who play significantly more minutes – as she’s been an unstoppable force when out there on the hardwood.
In fact, if you stretched her current averages to be per 36 minutes, in line with the League’s leading contributors, Fagbenle would be putting up numbers in the realm of 27 points and 13 rebounds a game, which would be good enough to lead both categories League-wide.
Fagbenle was selected to all three Teams of the Year – All-British, All-Defensive and All-League – and was instrumental in leading the Lions to Championship and Trophy success alongside a historic EuroCup triumph, where London became the first British side ever to win a major European title.
The 31-year-old left the Lions recently to take on an opportunity in the WNBA with Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever, but her impact on this London franchise remains in her absence, as the EuroCup Champions look to complete a perfect season this Sunday with a Playoff Final victory at The O2..
Speaking following confirmation of her award, Fagbenle said:
