Sevenoaks Suns’ play-caller Len Busch has spoken of the need for his team to re-discover their shooting touch as they look to pen another historical chapter.
The south-east franchise will compete in their first ever major showpiece event on Sunday when they take on Leicester Riders in the WBBL Trophy Final at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow.
But, if they want to turn an additional page and go one step further and lift he coveted silverware, Busch knows they must bounce back from last Sunday’s league loss.
He said: We’re expecting a tough game, since Leicester have a ton of weapons
“We have been fortunate to have already taken a couple of wins against them this season, but we saw last Sunday when we were beaten by Mystics, exactly what happens when you don’t shoot the ball well enough.
“In the WBBL you know that on any given night you can lose if you aren’t shooting to the required standard.
“If we do shoot well on Sunday against Riders, then I think we will be there or thereabouts – although they will be thinking the same.
“The loss against Manchester brought us back down to earth. It reminded us about how hard we need to keep working and that we can’t ever begin to think we are better than we are.
“Having said that, the players have been great since the turn of the year and especially Gabby [Nikitinaite] and Dani [Lozzi] who have become starting five players,” continued Busch.
“They weren’t playing as well before and have really stepped things up a lot in their respective games.
“That also takes some of the pressure away from the experienced players and the likes of Cat [Carr] can do other things as well as scoring such as rebounding or handing out assists.”
He is also keen that the club makes the most of their chance to shine on BBC Sport in a game that will be shown on the red button – as well as worldwide on the BBC Sport website, App and via Connected TV.
“I am hoping Sunday will be an exciting game and most of all, I want the players to soak it all up and enjoy the experience,” stressed Busch.
“It also gives the club good exposure on BBC Sport, so young players in the South East know we are available and have an available route to play at this level.
“We already have new players coming into the club in our junior programme and I know they look with excitement at the WBBL team and this will fuel it even more which is great for us.”
The game against Riders will tip-off at 12.30 on Sunday.
