With the inaugural and historic WBBL Cup Final between Nottingham Wildcats and Manchester Mystics now approaching, we turn to Scottish international and former Great Britain U20 guard Robyn Lewis for her take on the big game at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham. She knows both teams well from her backcourt duels with Caledonia Pride!

“I expect the Final to be really close as both teams have players who can put points on the board.

“Also, both teams have coaches and players able to recognise changes quickly and adapt to things on the go. I think this will make the game very tactical with plenty of adjustments throughout.

“For me, the team that can consistently defend through these changes will likely come out on top.

“Nottingham will have to focus on containing Georgia Jones who can put all of her team-mates in positions to score. Manchester have played some great team basketball in the first part of the season and move the ball really well for each other.

“[Dom] Allen, [Rheanne] Bailey and [Amy] Browne regularly and deservedly receive recognition, but Manchester’s real strength lies in their depth with the likes of [Jo] Claydon, [Nicky] Welling and [Isabel] Bueriberi all able to make scoring contributions.

“If Nottingham can limit Georgia they will make it difficult for other players to score too as her facilitation is key to Manchester’s offence.

“Meanwhile, Manchester will have to contain Ashley Harris both in scoring and in keeping her off the glass. I would say Nottingham have a size advantage overall and so Manchester will really have to concentrate on the rebounding battle.

“As well as Harris, there’s [Jess] Hurd, [Hannah] Shaw and [Vanessa] Da Silva who all provide legitimate rebounding presence – as well as Nottingham’s athletic outside players who effectively crash the glass.

“Siobhan Prior also needs to be mentioned. She is a dominant player for the Wildcats, contributing at both ends of the floor and providing strong leadership. Containing both Harris and Prior would likely unsettle Nottingham and put Manchester in a favourable position.

“If I had to call it, I would give Manchester the edge as I think they have a slightly deeper bench.

“However, if Wildcats can wear down Jones, they will put themselves in a position to win.”
