Fritz delight as Suns maintain title bid

Sevenoaks Suns moved an impressive 16-1 record at the weekend as they ensured they stay ahead in the WBBL Championship title race.

Len Busch’s side defeated third placed Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters 76-70 to open up a four-point lead over Leicester Riders – though they do have two games still in hand.

Judit Fritz starred with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists to help the Suns to victory as they closed on a 7-0 run.

“We were preparing for a tough game against a strong Sheffield team who are currently third in the table and we got nothing less than what we expected,” declared Fritz.

“They came out strong and played very physical basketball. They gave us some difficulties under the basket and we really had to come together as a team to manage to stop them from getting those “easy baskets”.

“We were doing “our thing” on the offensive end – all we needed was to pick up our defence and match Sheffield’s physicality. We did just that. It was a tough game from the tip until the very end.

“I feel extremely happy that we could get away with the `W`. It was thanks to our determination and to always playing together as a TEAM.”

Sheffield were without Helen Naylor for the trip south having suffered an injury in Friday night’s 79-60 success over Oaklands Wolves on BBC Sport.

Jen Ashton put up 21 points along with 10 assists and 8 steals in the win with Gianna Woods posting 20 points and 16 rebounds for a fine double-double.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Wildcats kept up their push for a top four finish as they defeated Manchester Mystics 73-60 behind a 24-point haul from Onayssa Sbahi.

In the battle for the Play-Offs, Durham Palatinates picked up their third win with a 52-66 road victory against Cardiff Met Archers with Caledonia Pride prevailing 64-46 over BA London Lions as Tricia Oakes netted 20 points.
