Both Sheffield Hatters and Oaklands Wolves were victorious at home on Saturday, the penultimate day of the league season.

In their final league game of the season, Sheffield, who had already confirmed a third place finish, defeated bottom placed Gloucester City Queens 93-72, off the backs of a near triple-double performance from Helen Naylor, 20 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, and leading scorer Ebony Horton with 28 points.

Gloucester started the contest confidently, taking a 9-4 start against the Yorkshire side, however an 11-0 run from the hosts quickly switched things up, and yet another 11-0 run later in the same period saw Hatters extend their lead to 18 to close the first quarter.

Gloucester responded in the opening three minutes of the second period, putting up their own 10-2 run to cut the Hatter’s lead down to 10, and outscoring the home side 24-18 to give Hatters just a 12 point lead going into the second half.

A 26-20 quarter from Sheffield saw them extend their lead to 18 in the third period, and it was that lead that would just prove too much for the visiting Gloucester side, who despite managing to chip away at the lead throughout the fourth, the Hatters kept responding with putting points back on the board to give them their final league game win of the season.

Meanwhile, Oaklands Wolves closed their 2021-22 season with a near 40-point victory over Newcastle Eagles, 84-47.

The Eagles managed to hold the home side to just a nine point lead going into the half-time break, but back-to-back threes from Merissa Quick and Kizzy Spence to open the third period quickly extended the Oaklands lead to 15, and then an additional 9-0 run from the home side saw them stretch their lead even further to 24.

As the Eagles began to struggle in the fourth and final period, Oaklands capitalised and ran out ahead of the visiting Northerners, knocking up another 11-0 run in the final three minutes of the contest, and keeping Eagles basket-less, to give them one final home win of the season.
