Oaklands Wolves striving for more after historic maiden triumph

Oaklands Wolves achieved their first-ever win in the WBBL Championship last Saturday and now look to build upon the historic moment.

Tia Freeman and Krisztina Nagy were both part of last season’s squad that endured a challenging welcome to the top-flight as they finished without a win in their debut campaign.

A three-game losing streak to start the current season was ended with a memorable 55-69 success on the road at Caledonia Pride – who celebrated their first league success earlier this year.

 

“When the final buzzer sounded, I felt so proud of our team and our performance,” said Freeman. “It was a mixture of relieft and excitement and that our hard work is beginning to pay off.

“We’ve changed a lot since last year so the win was so important to show we are competitive this year and will bring a lot more to the court.”

Nagy was defiant following the victory, adding: “It was a huge win for us. Coach Lee Ryan believed in us and knew we could do it and it gave us the energy which was insane.

“I’m really proud of everyone in the team and thankful to be part of the experience of recording our first-ever win.

“There will be many more to come and I’m proud to be a wolf.”

With the weight of a first win off their shoulders, Freeman believes the team can now push on to greater heights as they target a trip to the post-season.

“We can now focus on playing to our real potential and making this year’s Play-Offs,” she added.

“I believe it shows we are a high-tempo competitive team and that we have the ability to win games this year.

“We have to make sure that we don’t now settle and keep pushing forward.”
