The new season is upon us and it has been a busy time on the social media scene, with the big news that #theWBBL is dead. Long live #BritishBasketball.

Moving on from that dour and perhaps too informative note…..the summer started well. Thanks mainly to Nottingham’s Hannah Shaw and her continued flow of tiny things (you are overdue a post by the way Hannah!)

The main story during the off-season has been the influx of some top name players and several senior Great Britain stars – including Chantelle Handy who couldn’t resist her native north-east any longer and has signed for Team Northumbria!

GB guard Eilidh Simpson will also play in the WBBL for the first time and that was a superb signing for Cardiff Met Archers. For those of you not familiar with her background, she grew up in a different country. This might give you a clue….

We didn’t just get new players by the way, we even got a new team and that was Durham Palatinates……(no we don’t know how it is rightly pronounced either). A big welcome is due and they have signed the electrifying Nicolette Fong Lyew Quee from their new derby rivals!

Of course there has also been some very hard work going on around the country – including at Caledonia Pride, who know all too well what it is like to be rookies after last year.

After promising performances during Prides pre-season tournament in Ireland the players are ready to start week 6 with a bang!

But who are the favorites? Well, Sevenoaks Suns might be a leading candidate for more silverware after they snapped up the free-scoring Judit Fritz.

And, we should also pay tribute to those players who have made a great contribution to the WBBL but have since moved on and especially our alumni who will be lighting it up Stateside. Players like the wonderful Kyla Nelson.

Finally, we look forward to seeing who the new stars of this year’s WBBL will be and more than anything, what tiny thing Hannah Shaw will find next.
