The Wrap

It was a successful weekend for the teams on the road as December’s WBBL Championship action began.

Sevenoaks Suns maintained their unbeaten start in the league as they moved to 8-0 with a convincing 52-84 triumph away at Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters.

Cat Carr led the way with a 27-point haul as well as eight assists, while five other players scored 8+ points in key contributions.

“It was a great win especially coming off last week’s Cup disappointment,” declared Ashleigh Munns.

“We regrouped and made it our mission to play together for each other. We came out strong defensively and never really let up.

“Road games are tough so it’s always satisfying to get the win, but no one game is ever more important than another. The league is so competitive this year that anyone can have success on any given day.

“We are just thankful our hard work in practise is paying off when we need it most.”

And, Munns believes it is on the defensive end where the Suns are particularly excelling.

“We work on defense religiously in practise, and we pride ourselves on being able to guard whoever is in front of us.

“But we are a versatile team and bring a lot of diversity offensively which can sometimes be difficult to guard.

“We have great leadership in T (Ta’Yani Clark) and Catt (Carr), and a productive bench that doesn’t drop the intensity of the game. We haven’t got a large squad, with only nine players, but everybody contributes to the team’s success.

She added: “We need to stick to what we know and what we’re good at, and take every game as a new challenge.

“Going forward, we need to reduce our turnover count and improve our shooting percentage from 3. If we can do that successfully, I think we will be difficult to beat.”

Meanwhile, Leicester Riders continued their good form as they defeated Manchester Mystics 63-82 away from home behind 20 points from Holly Winterburn.

Nottingham Wildcats dominated the middle periods en route to a 44-78 win at Oaklands Wolves with Ashley Harris starring with 31 points, 13 rebounds and six steals.

Also victorious on their travels were Caledonia Pride as they pulled away from BA London Lions to earn a 60-74 success. Rosanna Reynolds top scored with 25 points with Tricia Oakes adding 20.
