Wolves slip up and Hatters draw level, as the Championship table race heats up

Cardiff experienced mixed results and Caledonia dominated in an action-packed run of entertaining games.

Leicester Riders 67 – 79 Cardiff Met Archers

Two teams in the bottom half of the Championship table matched up on Friday afternoon, when Leicester and Cardiff tipped off at the Mattioli Arena.

The game began with a taster of the strong individual performance from Leicester’s Katie Januszewska, who helped push the Riders to a 4-0 lead within the first minute. Cardiff responded quickly through Connie Clark, who scored a pair of lay-ups to tie the game.

The teams exchanged leads back and forth, with Clark and Brook Bigott trading baskets. The game resembled a game of cat and mouse, with Leicester edging ahead only for Cardiff to respond with multiple game-tying makes.

Leicester’s Jessica Eadsforth-Yates hit a couple of lay-ups to help her side maintain the lead, while Kaia Harrison contributed with free throws. Cardiff’s Sara Jorgensen then stepped up from the bench, hitting a contested three-pointer to narrow the gap. At the end of the first quarter, the Archers trailed by just one point, setting the stage for a competitive second period.

The second quarter saw Cardiff elevate their game. They started the period with a 6-0 run, led by Abigail Yunker, who knocked down a three-pointer and coolly converted free throws to give the Archers the lead. Leicester responded through Harrison and Eadsforth-Yates, but Cardiff remained on top as Jenna Hoschouer and Laura Shanahan combined for a lay-up and a three-pointer to widen the gap.

The teams then went through a scoring drought, but Cardiff finished the half strong with another 6-0 run. Stewart and Hoschouer were key in this late surge, giving Cardiff a six-point lead as both teams headed into the locker rooms for halftime.

Cardiff came out of the break firing on all cylinders. Stewart and Yunker combined for a pair of lay-ups, pushing the Archers’ lead to double digits. Leicester quickly hit back with a strong offensive run, with Eadsforth-Yates hitting a step-back jumper and Bigott contributing with a couple of lay-ups to pull the Riders closer. However, Cardiff found an answer to Leicester’s comeback, with Clark and Jorgensen hitting mid-range shots to extend their lead once again.

Leicester’s Januszewska converted on an ‘and-1’ play, and Harrison added a lay-up to bring the Riders within seven points, but Cardiff maintained their five-point lead as Stewart scored two key buckets to end the third quarter.

The fourth quarter saw Leicester mount a determined effort to close the gap. Shaw and Bigott scored early, pulling the Riders to within two points. A couple of minutes later, Harrison split a pair of free throws, bringing Leicester within a single point of the Archers.

Just when it seemed that Cardiff was in trouble, Yunker nailed a crucial three-pointer to extend the Archers’ lead to four. Stewart then earned a trip to the free-throw line and converted, giving Cardiff a six-point lead. Shanahan then enjoyed a strong run, logging four points in just three seconds to create an eight-point gap.

Leicester continued to fight back, with Januszewska and Eadsforth-Yates putting in strong efforts, but Cardiff had found their rhythm. Clark played a critical role down the stretch, earning multiple trips to the free-throw line. She made six out of eight free throws in the final two minutes, sealing the win for Cardiff.

When the final buzzer sounded, Cardiff had secured a 12-point victory. It was a strong team effort, as the Archers earned their third win of the season, while Leicester, despite their valiant efforts, came up short.

Most Valuable Player: Connie Clark played a starring role for Cardiff, adding 13 boards and an assists to her 22-point scoring performance.

Manchester Basketball 57 – 72 B. Braun Sheffield Hatters

Sheffield arrived at the National Basketball Performance Centre on Saturday afternoon, looking to apply pressure to the league-leading Oaklands Wolves. Sitting one position below their opponents, Manchester hoped to do the same.

The game began with Sheffield taking an early lead, as Shauna Harrison opened the scoring with a lay-up. Manchester quickly hit back, with Camille Hillotte scoring a pair of lay-ups to put the hosts ahead.

Emma Gandini powered inside to close the gap for Sheffield, but Hillotte responded with two quick three-pointers, pushing Manchester back into a lead. Danni Williams and Davida Dale combined for a couple of scores, building a nine-point advantage for the home team midway through the first quarter.

After a brief lull, Dale extended Manchester’s lead to double digits with a difficult lay-up. Sheffield’s Nija Collier had a pair of successful free-throws to trim the gap to six as the first quarter came to an end.

The second quarter saw Manchester continue to build momentum. Maura Fitzpatrick came off the bench to hit a three, and Williams followed up with a mid-range jumper, extending the lead.

Sheffield, however, found an answer through Georgia Gayle, who hit a three-pointer and combined with Tyia Singleton to pull the Hatters within three. Singleton then hit a jumper to make it a one-point game.

Manchester responded with Williams and Dale making lay-ups, but Fitzpatrick drained another three to give the hosts an eight-point advantage. Singleton made two free throws to close the gap, and Sheffield trailed by six points at halftime.

Sheffield came out strong in the third quarter, with Singleton and Gayle each contributing important shots. Williams and Hillotte scored from inside and out for Manchester, initially keeping the visitors at bay with a double-digit lead. However, Sheffield was not done yet. Singleton hit two shots at the line, and Gayle drained two three-pointers in quick succession, pulling the Hatters within five.

Destinee Walker stepped up off the bench, hitting a three to make it a two-point game. Gayle added another triple, and Sheffield completed an impressive 13-point comeback to take the lead. Williams hit a lay-up to give Manchester the lead back, heading into the final period.

The fourth quarter saw Sheffield turn up the heat. Gandini, Tingleton, and Walker combined for three consecutive jumpers to move the Hatters ahead by six. Walker then finished a tough lay-up, extending Sheffield’s lead to nine.

Hillotte and Williams responded with scores from close range to keep Manchester’s hopes alive, but Gayle and Singleton carved their way through the Manchester defence, earning trips to the free-throw line and extending the Hatters’ lead to double digits. Manchester began to tire, and Singleton capitalised, scoring five unanswered points to create a 16-point gap.

In the final moments, Sheffield remained in control, and when the buzzer sounded, they had secured a 15-point victory, moving level with the Wolves at the top of the Championship table.

Most Valuable Player: Tyia Singleton made a huge difference for Sheffield, recording 23 points, eight rebounds and two assists.

Newcastle Eagles 86 – 70 Oaklands Wolves

With a chance to respond to the Sheffield win, Oaklands travelled to the Vertu Motors Arena to face Newcastle on Saturday night.

The game started with Oaklands looking to make a statement, as Shanice Beckford-Norton hit a three-pointer to give the Wolves an early lead. However, Newcastle responded swiftly through Lauren Saiki and Shannon Hatch, who scored from both inside and outside to take a lead of their own. Oaklands briefly retook the advantage, but Jada Guinn stepped up for the Eagles, scoring a pair of lay-ups to reclaim the lead for Newcastle.

Sam Ashby then responded for Oaklands, draining two deep three-pointers in quick succession to pull the Wolves closer. Tierra Hodges made a lay-up for Newcastle, but Terri Battle came off the bench for Oaklands to hit a mid-range jumper and convert a free throw, snatching the lead back for the visitors.

Guinn answered with a tough lay-up to tie the game, then followed up with another to give Newcastle the lead again. However, Battle finished the quarter with a key score, allowing Oaklands to hold a one-point lead at the end of the first.

The second quarter saw Guinn start strong for Newcastle, hitting another close-range basket to give the Eagles the lead once more. Oaklands briefly fought back, with Ella Fotu driving to the basket to score, but Hatch responded for Newcastle, followed by Sarah Birkett hitting a three-pointer to extend the Eagles’ lead.

Despite strong efforts from Fotu and Ashby, Newcastle maintained control of the half, with Hodges contributing an ‘and-1’ play to push the lead to seven. Just before halftime, Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant and Ashby scored in the paint, reducing the deficit to just three points for Oaklands.

The third quarter was a turning point as Oaklands came out strong after the break. Beckford-Norton and Ashby made baskets in the opening minutes, pushing the Wolves ahead by one. Ashby continued to score inside, giving Oaklands a steady advantage despite strong responses from Hatch and Birkett.

The teams each went on short offensive runs, exchanging leads, until Newcastle took control in the final minutes of the period. Guinn and Hodges finished difficult lay-ups, extending the Eagles’ lead. McGhee-Pleasant hit a three-pointer to pull Oaklands back to within four, heading into the final quarter.

Newcastle found their rhythm in the fourth, starting with a three-pointer from Willis to open the period. Oaklands responded with a three from Fotu, but Saiki and Hatch combined for a scoring run, pushing the Eagles’ lead to seven.

Hodges and Guinn added lay-ups to extend the advantage to double digits. Oaklands struggled with missed shots and turnovers, unable to stop the now-flying Eagles. Saiki and Hodges added crucial buckets in the final minutes, sealing the win for Newcastle.

By the end of the game, Newcastle had secured a 16-point victory, upsetting the table-topping Wolves and proving their strength in the second half.

Caledonia Gladiators 87 – 31 Nottingham Wildcats

At the Playsport Arena, Caledonia had a chance to catch up with the leading pack , as they faced a Nottingham team hunting for just their third win of the season.

The game began with Caledonia asserting their dominance early. The Gladiators quickly jumped to a 7-0 lead, fueled by Mathilde Domenger, who hit a three-pointer and converted a free throw.

Nottingham, however, managed to respond with an 8-0 run, taking a brief lead thanks to Alice Fallon and Jiselle Havas, who both scored from close range. But the Gladiators weren’t deterred and put together a 13-0 run of their own, retaking the lead and finishing an incredibly unique first quarter up by 12 points.

Caledonia’s momentum continued in the second quarter, with Domenger once again hitting a three to extend the lead. Delaynie Bryne and Kat Tudor followed suit with jump shots, widening the gap to 20 points. Kerry McGhee added a couple of lay-ups, while Emma Kerr came off the bench to hit a three-pointer, making things even more difficult for Nottingham.

The Wildcats went over five minutes without scoring, while the Gladiators continued to pile on the points. By halftime, Caledonia had built a massive 33-point lead.

The third quarter saw Nottingham’s struggles continue. They went scoreless for the first four minutes of the period, while Caledonia’s balanced offensive attack only grew stronger.

 Erin Antosh attempted to get the Wildcats back on track, but the Gladiators were unstoppable. The Wildcats’ turnovers piled up, and Caledonia’s lead ballooned to 53 points heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth, Caledonia kept their foot on the gas, with Brown and Bryne continuing to score from close range, further extending the lead. The Gladiators dominated both ends of the floor, controlling the glass and dictating the pace of play. At one point, they pushed their advantage to an astounding 60 points.

Nottingham, unable to get any production from their bench, finished the game without any bench points and committed 19 more turnovers than their opponents.

Despite late efforts from Fallon and Havas, who added a few buckets for Nottingham, the game ended with a commanding 56-point victory for Caledonia. This dominant performance not only showcased the Gladiators’ strength but also put them level on points with Newcastle in fourth place in the standings.

Most Valuable Player: Mathilde Domenger played a key role for Caledonia, recording 14 points, two rebounds and six assists on her way to an overwhelming victory.
