Wolves get off the mark in the Trophy
WBBL Trophy Group Stage
Cardiff Met Archers 64-84 Oaklands Wolves (16-23,35-44,51-62)
It was a bitter-sweet weekend for Oaklands Wolves in the WBBL Trophy as they took their first win in the competition this season.
Bouncing back from a home-court mauling by Riders 24 hours earlier, Coach Lee Ryan and his players got rolling by taking down Archers on the road.
Leading scorers – Stef Collins 18, Sarah Wagstaff 12, Robyn Lewis 7 (Archers) – Anneke Schluter 22, Tia Freeman 13, Meg Pritchard 8, Raquek Navarro-Martinez 8, Roya Rustamzada 8, Dorka Boros 8 (Wolves).
Turning point – When Archers cut the gap to 8 points with 8 minutes remaining, the hosts sensed a possible rescue missio. But, a couple of free-throws and a big triple by Beth Sarson for Wolves, extinguished those prospects of an Archers comeback.
Key stat – Archers spilled the ball 24 times which helped Oaklands, as did the Wolves making 50% from beyond the three-point line.
Game hero(es) – Anneke Schluter was the class act with 22 points from a 7 of 11 shooting effort, while Roya Rustamzada weighed in with an all-action 8 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks.
