Northumbria end Pride’s valiant Play-Offs quest.
WBBL Championship
Team Northumbria 76 (22,40,64) (Gorrell 25, Bonnenberger 18, Quintas 16)
Caledonia Pride 57 (12,24,36) (Bastian 19, Thomson 16, Robb 9)
Caledonia Pride saw their hopes of making the Play-Offs in their first WBBL season ended as they were beaten 76-57 on the road at Team Northumbria.
The visitors needed a victory coupled with a loss to Cardiff Met Archers over the weekend to make the post-season, but their valiant effort falls short with a 5-13 record.
Alison Gorrell top scored for Northumbria with 25 points including 4-of-6 from downtown, while Kara Bonnenberger posted a huge double-double with 18 points and 16 rebounds.
After an even start, Pride took their first lead on a three from Hannah Robb to make it 10-11, but eight points from Gorrell inspired a 12-1 run from the hosts to surge ahead.
Northumbria continued to push on and another strong finish in the form of an 8-0 burst gave them a 40-24 half-time advantage.
A dominant third period increased the lead to 28, and despite their hopes being all but over, Pride produced a resilient final quarter to take it 12-21, ending their campaign on a brighter note.
Northumbria finish with a 10-8 record and await the team that ends up in third in the first round of the Play-Offs.
