London Lions 94-61 Essex Rebels

EuroCup Women Champions London Lions go two points clear at the top of the table after a clean 94-61 victory against the Essex Rebels at home, in a tale of two halves. One of which was close between the two sides and one which was a dominant performance from the Lions.

Starting Fives:

London Lions: Ivana Katanic, Katsiaryna Snytsina, Holly Winterburn, Savannah Wilkinson, Abby Meyers.

Essex Rebels: Claire Paxton, Daniela Turner, Renee Busch, Katherine Tudor, Dayzsha Rogan.

First Half

Fresh off their European victory, it was the Lions that took the ball from tip.

Although missing some of their star players from their EuroCup Women win, London took control in this first quarter as the points started to roll in, and by the end of the period, they were 11 points up against their southeast rivals.

The final 10 minutes of the half was a score-fest – a sight to behold and a treat for the fans – with a total of 49 points scored across both teams… there was hardly a blip in the action.

The Rebels at one point trailed by 19 points but managed to compose themselves and bring it down to only a 12-point gap, before Savannah Wilkinson hit a two-point jump shot to put the Lions 14 points ahead at the halfway mark.

Second Half

In the second half, we never saw that second-quarter magic come back from the Rebels, as they just could not keep up with the pace of the game that the Lions dictated.

By the end of the penultimate quarter, the score line was 74-51 in the Lions’ favour. And they weren’t done.

The Rebels had no fight left in them heading into the final quarter, as the Lions outclassed them in almost every situation.

The whistle could not come any sooner for the Rebels, as the Lions won 94-61 with a 33-point cushion by the end of the game.

Player of the Game

The Player of the Game goes to the Lions’ Holly Winterburn, who put up a mind-blowing 21 points this game, well clear of anyone else. Her dominant performance today contributed significantly to the Lions’ domination over Essex.
