Amongst the four-game weekend, one undefeated record in the Championship came to an end.
Sheffield Hatters 120 – 78 Nottingham Wildcats
The Sheffield Hatters produced a ridiculous scoring performance to defeat the Nottingham Wildcats 120 – 78, bouncing back from their weekend defeat to the Essex Rebels in emphatic style.
Kayala Buggs was automatic from deep in the opening period of the game, draining all four of her three-point attempts for the Nottingham Wildcats. Georgia Gayle provided her own shooting clinic to propel the Hatters into an early lead, finishing the quarter with 12 points.
Gayle’s confidence appeared to grow with each possession, getting to the foul line on three occasions and draining all six attempts, while taking her total for the half up to an impressive 20 points. Sheffield took a 14-point advantage into the halftime break.
The Hatters continued their aggressive gameplan as the action restarted. Grace Graham made sure her presence was known by showcasing her offensive attributes, taking her scoring total to 19 on the night.
Buggs ended the game with six of her nine shots from outside the perimeter falling for Nottingham; however, it was not enough to prevent Sheffield establishing a 42-point deficit.
Caledonia Gladiators 115-70 Newcastle Eagles
Caledonia Gladiators put a blemish on the Newcastle Eagles’ perfect start to the season with a convincing 115-70 victory at PlaySport.
The Gladiators started hot and, as the game wore on, kept bringing the heat against the shorthanded Eagles, who just were not on the races. The hosts shot 54% from the field, with their lead peaking at 46.
Former Newcastle star Tierra Hodges haunted her old club with 28 points and nine rebounds, going 11/17 from the field. Anastasia Warren added 21.
Zoe Willis led Newcastle with 16 points.
Manchester Basketball 82-74 Oaklands Wolves
A convincing first half helped Manchester Basketball overcome the champions, Oaklands Wolves, 82-74 in the north-west.
Maaja Bratka enjoyed a double-double of 23 points and 13 rebounds to lead Manchester, who led 44-33 at the half and didn’t allow the Wolves to get a look, despite the visitors enjoying the better of the second half exchanges.
Great Britain international Shanice Beckford-Norton led Oaklands with a game-high 26 points.
Cardiff Met Archers 45-79 London Lions
London Lions ambushed the Cardiff Met Archers in the Welsh capital, as Jada Lewis starred in their 79-45 victory.
Lewis led the Lions with 21 points, eight rebounds and four steals as they took an early 19-4 lead and never relinquished their advantage from there.
She led five Lions players in double figures, helped by Jamila Thompson and Sara Ahmadpour, who both had 12. Amelia Scharpf had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Archers.
Leicester Riders 62-74 Essex Rebels
Essex Rebels ended the year on a high as a dominant third quarter paved the way for a 74-62 road win against the Leicester Riders.
Leicester held a narrow 33-31 lead at the break, until the Rebels stormed out of the blocks in the third, outscoring the Riders 20-7 and saw out the game.
Maria Blazejewski led Essex with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Jada Holland had 28 for the Riders.
