Brave Northumbria jubilant, Second win for Wolves

Team Northumbria avenged their Cup defeat against Caledonia Pride last month as they earned a 62-63 victory through a courageous effort.

Alison Gorrell poured in 22 points and collected 11 rebounds, while finishing the game on one leg as she battled the pain of an ankle injury with the visitors depleted in theirrotation.

 

“This week we had a lot of injuries and sickness so it meant a lot of people had to step up in unfamiliar roles,” she said.

“We really came together and stuck to our game plan. Everyone had some big plays and played with a lot of heart.

“Everyone on the team worked so hard, when we were down to 4 players I didn’t want to let all of our hard work to go to waste, so I decided to go back in.

“It was an intense game and I wanted to do everything I could to secure the victory, especially because all of my teammates were doing the same. It was a great team win.”

Northumbria had enjoyed an early 15-30 lead, but saw Pride storm back to set up a tense finale with Chris Bunten’s side able to hold on.

Oaklands Wolves started the weekend with their second win of the season as they beat BA London Lions 63-69 away from home on Friday night.

Krisztina Nagy top scored with 15 points in the road win with Wolves improving their league record to 2-9.

 

Meanwhile, Leicester Riders joined Sevenoaks Suns on 11 wins as they recorded a comfortable 74-55 success at home to Cardiff Met Archers as Dee Hayward and Kate Oliver netted 16 points apiece.

Nottingham Wildcats produced one of their best results of the season with a 79-74 victory against Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters.

Ashley Harris starred with 25 points and 13 rebounds to ensure the Wildcats head into the WBBL Cup Final with winning momentum.

Also, Manchester Mystics overcame a slow start to see off Durham Palatinates 48-68 on the road with Lauren Thomas-Johnson and Georgia Jones sharing 32 points to help their side to an 8-3 record.
