We may be approaching February, but the debutantes continue to arrive, with another two in this week’s line-up.
Alison Gorrell (Team Northumbria)
With a short-handed Team Northumbria involved in a tight one against Caledonia Pride, Gorrell showed her commitment to the team by playing through the pain barrier to help her side sneak a memorable win in Edinburgh. She corralled 20 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks in a tremendous all-around effort.
Esther Vazquaz (Oaklands Wolves)
Our first debutante is the Spaniard, who was the central figure for Oaklands Wolves as they picked up a rare and precious WBBL Championship success. They prevailed in their south-east derby against BA London Lions, with Vazquaz registering a smart double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Alyesha Lovett (Nottingham Wildcats)
Our second debutante finally makes her All-Star Five starting appearance after several mentions on the bench throughout the season. Her excellent double-double for Nottingham helped to take down the Hatters as the Lovett finished a hard-fought contest with 19 points and 13 rebounds – as well as 3 assists.
Jamila Thompson (Leicester Riders)
Yet again the Great Britain forward showed she isn’t only about athleticism and power, but is also one of the best passing frontcourt players in the country. She had a wonderful near-double-double of 12 rebounds and 9 assists for Riders in their match-up with Cardiff Met Archers. Thompson also contributed 6 points and 2 steals.
Ashley Harris (Nottingham Wildcats)
The familiar face of Harris is back for a fifth time this season and she is only the second player to have hit that milestone so far. Her place was sealed with a towering 25 points and 13 boards against Sheffield, also producing 4 steals and 3 assists, in an eye-catching all-around display for the reigning champions.
Off the bench – Evelyn Ovner (Team Northumbria), Lauren-Thomas-Johnson (Manchester Mystics), Laura Shanahan (Cardiff Met Archers), Charlotte Elmore (BA London Lions), Hannah Robb (Caledonia Pride), Steph Gandy (Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters), Kate Oliver (Leicester Riders).
