The Wrap

Just two games took place on a quiet weekend in the WBBL, but Manchester Mystics and Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters picked up important road wins.

The Mystics moved back into the top four after they recorded a 66-80 success away at Sevenoaks Suns – who now look forward to the WBBL Trophy Final next Sunday.

Amy Browne led the way with 19 points as the visitors opened up a 16-point lead at the end of the first quarter.

Sevenoaks rallied multiple times before they were eventually beaten as Georgia Jones inspired a late surge in the fourth to wrap up the win.

“I think we started off really well to set the tone of the game,” said Rachel James, who added eight points off the bench.

“We have had to adapt in the last few weeks and are still in the process of trying to find our identity again and yesterday was definitely the first step.

“Everyone on the team has their own basketball identity and it’s just about finding where each part fits and days when we get it right, we are unstoppable.

She added: “We moved the ball and ourselves well and we have recently been in the situation where we are chasing the game so it was nice to be in control.

“It gave us that extra confidence that we needed to get over the line.

“Credit to Sevenoaks because they never gave up and every time we pulled away they came right back.”

Meanwhile, Sheffield were led by Georgia Gayle’s 26 points as they defeated Barking Abbey Crusaders 61-77.

Helen Naylor and Steph Gandy combined for a further 33 points in the win as the Hatters join Leicester Riders on a 9-4 record behind league leaders, Nottingham Wildcats.
